MINIMALISM: HOW TO LET GO

We all know nostalgia. That weird feeling somewhere between fond memory and painful emotion. But it's not just a romantic thing, or something for dreamers. A lot of people actually suffer from nostalgia. It holds them back in their everyday life because they're constantly living in the past.
Sometimes it's better to admit to ourselves, that we have given certain things up. Like that ukulele that is collecting dust in the corner of your room or that sewing machine, that you got for your birthday because you watch Project Runway. It's not a shame to give up hobbies. But be sure to give the accompanying items away, so that somebody else can enjoy them and you will not have a bad conscious from looking at them daily.
Minimalism can help you to overcome that and to be present, instead of living in the past. This way you can really enjoy life to the fullest, because you will not be clinging on to long gone moments. But how can you let go of things?
Honestly the best tip I can give here is to simply declutter. By giving up the material object, we also let go of the emotional baggage to a certain extent, whether it is positive or negative. So it is a really good exercise to declutter your home: you will let go of a lot of emotions, that you have been caring around with you for a long time. Especially memorabilia can be tough to declutter, though. What to do with old birthday cards or letters from former lovers? If you ask me, just toss them. This might seem heartless at first, but there's really no use in keeping them. At least from view, they don't bring me joy, they just hold me back in the past and that is not what I want. I want to be present and focus on the here and now.
